Plus new writers award — bring maths to life

Rules of entry

Who can enter?

The Plus new writers awards are open to anyone except professional writers. There are two categories, one for those who are at secondary school and one for everyone else.

Your article

  • Entries must be typed in English. Entries must be no longer than 2000 words. When printed either as a Word document or PDF file, single spaced with 12 point font, the article must be under 10 A4 pages in length, including all images.
  • Your article should consist of a single Word or PDF file, with all images included in the appropriate place.
  • Your entry must contain a list of the main sources you have used. See the guidelines for entrants for information on how to put together a bibliography.
  • Your entry must be self-contained. Don't include links to other webpages, except in the bibliography.
  • By entering the competition you warrant that the entry is original work and not a copy or substantial copy of anyone else's work.
  • By entering the competition you warrant that all images you use in your article are either created by you, are in the public domain or that you have obtained written permission for their use from the copyright holder.
  • Your name must not appear anywhere in your article. It must only appear on the entry form and the copyright form. This is because your article will be judged anonymously.
  • Rules for submission of your article

  • The closing date for entries is September 30th, 2006.
  • Electronic entries must be emailed to mmp@maths.cam.ac.uk with "Plus new writers award 2006" as the subject header. Your entry must consist of your article (as a single Word or PDF file), the completed entry form (download as a Word document or print the PDF and write on it clearly), and a scanned copy of the completed and signed copyright form. If you are under 18 then the copyright form must be cosigned by a parent or guardian.
  • If you submit your entry by post, you must send it to
